What Is HSV-2? (Genital Herpes)
Herpes simplex virus two (HSV-2) is the virus that causes genital herpes outbreaks and is characterized by the formation of fluid-filled and painful blisters below the waistline. Outbreaks occur most commonly in the genital, buttocks and thigh areas.
Many don’t know that herpes simplex virus one (HSV-1), commonly referred to as the cold sore virus, and the herpes simplex virus two (HSV-2) strains are virtually identical under a microscope, sharing 50% of their DNA.
